Sir George Ivan Morrison OBE is a singer, songwriter, and producer of records from Northern Ireland. He gained fame in the late 1960s when he was the leading singer from the Northern Irish R&B and rock group Them with whom he recorded the garage band’s hit song “Gloria.” He was popular with his fans by the name of “Van the Guy.”
After the huge success of the popular song “Brown Eyed Girl” in 1967, he started on his own under the pop-hit-oriented guidance by Bert Berns. “Transcendental” as well as “inspired” have been used to describe the live performances. Van Morrison remained a member of the Monarchs. He first performed in Europe with the group when he was just 17 years old. The group released their debut single “Boozoo Hully Gully”/”Twingy Baby” under the name Georgie and the Monarchs while in Germany.
The group broke up in November 1963, and Morrison was later part of The Manhattan Showband with Geordie Sproule and guitarist Herbie Armstrong. Morrison joined Armstrong when he auditioned to join The Golden Eagles and Brian Rossi who later became known as the Spokes and was then enlisted to sing blues.
He later quit his Golden Eagles band to join Billy Harrison, Alan Henderson, Ronnie Millings, and Eric Wrixon in an R&B-oriented club band. The band, which was dubbed “Them,” proceeded to record an array of songs. Them embarked on a 2-month tour across in the United States in 1966. The band disbanded following their appearance in Ireland and Morrison focused his attention on the writing of songs.
In February of 1980 in the month of February 1980, the Irish singer’s most controversial record, “Common One,” was released. It contained six songs including the longest track, which included “summertime in England.” The album, ‘Beautiful Vision came out two years later. “Vanlose Stairway,” “Scandinavia,” and “She Gives Me Religion” were among the tracks included.
