Eric Clapton

Eric Clapton, originally Eric Patrick Clapp (born March 30, 1945, in Ripley, Surrey), England), was a British rock musician who became a prominent singer-songwriter and guitarist in the 1960s and 1970s.

It was 1958 and rock ‘n roll had reached the British music scene. Clapton requested a guitar for his thirteenth birthday. Clapton received a Hoyer guitar made in Germany, but he found it difficult to use and painful. He was 16 when he was accepted into Kingston College of Art. It was here, surrounded with teenagers who shared his musical tastes, that Clapton truly took to the instrument. Clapton fell in love with blues guitarists like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and Alexis Korner. This was a rarity in England.

Clapton later joined John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers in 1965. He recorded an album called The Bluesbreakers the following year with Eric Clapton. This established Clapton’s reputation as one of the greatest guitarists of his time. It is widely considered one of the best blues albums ever, and featured songs like “What’d I Say” or “Ramblin’ on My Mind”. Clapton’s amazing guitar playing on the album inspired his most flattering nickname, God. A bit of graffiti at a London Tube station read “Clapton Is God.”

Clapton was a member from 1963 to 1965 of the blues-rock group The Yardbirds.

Clapton joined John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers in the mid-1960s. After leaving the Yardbirds, Clapton formed Cream with Ginger Baker as a drummer and Jack Bruce as bassist.

After Cream’s dissolution, he formed the blues-rock band Blind Faith with Baker and Steve Winwood.
